English - Writing

At St Mary Queen of Martyrs, we know and understand our children. We have created a curriculum that encourages them to become enthusiastic and engaged with English. We aim to ensure that English lessons develop pupil’s spoken language, reading, writing grammar and spelling. We incorporate the Talk for Writing model into the teaching of writing from EYFS through to Year 6. Our children are taught writing skills through studying a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, including the use of teacher-produced models. Children are encouraged to learn texts by heart, internalising the language and structures, before innovating and then applying more independent changes to the model until they can write freely with confidence.

We have worked hard to provide our children with rich and varied learning opportunities that help them to become confident and enthusiastic learners. We want our children to have a positive attitude towards communication and to be able to independently express their emotions and their ideas.
