Prevent Strategy
PREVENT at Our School
At St Mary Queen of Martyrs, we are committed to keeping all children safe.
One part of our safeguarding duty is supporting the PREVENT strategy, which aims to protect children from the risks of radicalisation and extremism.
What is PREVENT?
PREVENT is a government initiative that helps stop people from being drawn into extremist ideas or activities. In primary schools, this means helping children develop:
- Confidence and resilience
- Respect for others
- The ability to think critically
- An understanding of how to stay safe online
What We Do in School
We promote children’s safety and wellbeing by:
- Teaching age appropriate lessons about respect, kindness, and staying safe
- Helping pupils understand and celebrate different cultures and beliefs
- Encouraging open discussion and critical thinking
- Teaching online safety as part of our computing and PSHE curriculum
- Training staff to recognise and respond to any concerns
- Working Together to Keep Children Safe
- We work closely with parents, carers, and local agencies.
How does Prevent relate to British Values?
Schools have been required to promote British values since 2014, and this will continue to be part of our response to the Prevent strategy.
British values include:
· Democracy
· The rule of law
· Individual liberty and mutual respect
· Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.
Key Terms
Extremism - vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values such as democracy, the rule of law and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.
Ideology - a set of beliefs
Terrorism - a violent action against people or property, designed to create fear and advance a political, religious or ideological cause.
Radicalisation - the process by which a person comes to support extremism and terrorism.
