RSE: Relationships and Sex Education

At St Mary Queen of Martyrs, we use the Diocesan approved programme, Life to the Full, to support the teaching of Relationship and Sex Education from the foundation stage through to year 6. Rooted securely in our Catholic faith, the programme teaches the statutory requirements in line with the teachings of the Church.

We teach RSE for the following main reasons.

• To empower children to be safe and safeguarded.

• To enable children to understand and respect their bodies

• To help children develop positive and healthy relationships appropriate to their age and development

• To support children to have positive self-esteem and body image

Teaching of RSE is statutory. Section 405 of the Education Act 1996 provides the right of parental withdrawal from the RSE provided at school except for those parts included in the National Curriculum. The Science curriculum in all maintained schools also includes content on human development, including reproduction, which there is no right to withdraw from. The information below from the Government explains further the importance of RSE and parental right to remove children from some elements of the curriculum.

The parents' leaflet produced by Ten Ten contains further information about the programme and its content. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school and we will be happy to answer them.
