PSHE

Intent:
PSHE enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

Implementation:
At St Mary Queen of Martyrs, we deliver the PSHE curriculum through:
· a range of subject strands
· our #SMQuality values
· school assemblies and collective worships that stimulate, challenge and nurture our children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity
· carefully selected whole school focuses, e.g. Anti-bullying week
· Through Key Awareness Days, e.g World Mental Health Day
· pupil roles and responsibilities, e.g. house captains and RE ambassadors
· visits and visitors from the local community, e.g. PCSO visit to EYFS
Every staff member knows it is their responsibility to be a positive role model, to have high expectations of our pupils and to equip them with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions (using the school rules—Safe, Ready & Respectful).
Explicit PSHE teaching for all children includes:
· A weekly PSHE lesson, incorporating the Jigsaw and Life to the Full programmes of work
· Within RE lessons utilising the Catholic Come & See diocese programme of teaching
· Through the ICT curriculum , e.g. online safety
· Through the Science curriculum, e.g. healthy eating
· Specific occasions where staff may feel it necessary to teach PSHE as a result of an issue which has arisen in their own class.
EYFS only:
Additionally, opportunities to further explore PSHE content in EYFS comes through the framework areas of Personal, Social and Emotional Development, and Understanding the World. Learning and development opportunities for these areas, as well as Communication and language, are interwoven within the pupils’ experience through daily EYFS play-based activities, role-play areas, quality children’s fiction and reflective discussion to begin to build pupils’ knowledge and understanding, skills, attitudes and attributes related to PSHE elements of education.
Recording of PSHE learning:
EYFS record PSHE related learning in Tapestry, alongside the rest of their curriculum.
Phase 1, 2 and 3 children have a ‘wholeness book’ to record their responses to, and progress in, PSHE sessions. These books travel with the children as they move to the next year group so they can look back at their learning and the next teacher can see the starting points. Key Awareness Days activities are also recorded in these books, e.g. Hello Yellow Day, Recycling Week etc.
Impact:
All children will understand the part they play in keeping our school safe, ready and respectful and be able to talk about the importance of their classroom charter.
Children will know who they can talk to at school if they need help.
Children of all abilities and backgrounds will access and actively take part in Jigsaw and Life to the Full lessons.
Children will talk enthusiastically about the roles, responsibilities and opportunities available to them at St. Mary Queen of Martyrs and look forward to moving further up the school to gain access to more of these.
Children will be able to see, consider and verbalise the different perspectives others may have.
Children will feel confident, resilient and ready to actively engage in the wider society.
