Design and Technology
At St Mary Queen of Martyrs, our Design and Technology curriculum aims to nurture children’s creativity, curiosity, and confidence as designers in an ever‑evolving technological world. We provide purposeful, real‑life design challenges that encourage pupils to think critically, solve problems, and apply their learning across a wide range of meaningful contexts.
Through high‑quality teaching, children develop the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to design, make and evaluate mechanical, electrical, structural, and digital products. They learn to work safely and skilfully with a variety of tools, materials and components, enabling them to bring their innovative ideas to life.
Our curriculum is enriched through strong links with mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art, supporting children in understanding how these disciplines integrate within the wider world of design and innovation. We promote a culture of resilience and reflection, encouraging pupils to test, refine, and improve their work as part of the iterative design process.
We are committed to fostering environmentally responsible designers by encouraging sustainable choices and an awareness of the impact of design on our planet. Above all, we seek to ignite a passion for design in all children—empowering both girls and boys to engage confidently and enthusiastically with every aspect of the Design and Technology curriculum.
Cooking & Nutrition
In Food Technology, our aim is to inspire children to develop lifelong healthy eating habits and an enjoyment of preparing nutritious food. We ensure all pupils gain a clear understanding of what constitutes a balanced diet and the physical and emotional benefits of healthy eating.
Children are given opportunities to taste, explore, and enjoy a diverse range of fresh, healthy foods, broadening their experiences and encouraging positive attitudes towards food. Through hands‑on cooking experiences, pupils learn essential life skills, enabling them to prepare simple, healthy meals safely and confidently.
Our food projects are carefully designed with the family kitchen in mind, empowering children to share their learning at home by cooking dishes alongside their families. Throughout their time in school, children gain the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy, sustainable, and ethical food choices.
We aim to cultivate positive relationships with food, promote wellbeing, and ensure every child leaves St Mary Queen of Martyrs equipped with the confidence and capability to lead a healthy lifestyle.
